I recently went to Boijmans  to see the exhibition "Gek van surrealisme", a collection from several collectors of surrealsim art.

Charley Toorop

While my better half was sitting studying I took a trip to Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, where and exhibition named "Bergense School & Charley Toorop" were held. There I bought the book "Charley Toorop. Vooral geen principes!" ("Without principles!") printed for the exhibition at Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam a couple of years ago.
Her life story fascinated me, the only daughter of the famous Jan Toorop, and herself also becoming a painter.

With a turbulent marriage that ends in a divorce, she seeks refuge in painting, expressing people and buildings, but also nature in a slightly naïve but highly expressionistic and sober way.

Ice Age art: arrival of the modern mind, The British Museum

We had a weekend in London, and on the flight over by KLM I was reading through the inflight magazine onboard the plane, and came over this exhibition at The British Museum. The weather was shitty, so it was a perfect opportunity to explore a museum exhibition.

I am also at the moment reading the final book by Jean M. Auel, "The Land of Painted Caves", so it was a perfect timing to go and see these ancient artworks on display.

It was really astonishing to see the details in the artwork, and to get an understanding of how time consuming some of these creations were.

One of the sculptures on display was the Lion Man (unfortunately a replica), a human shaped body with a lion head.

Sea turtles and a new tattoo

I have for a long time been a big fan of sea turtles, they are just amazing creature, and they have been around since the dinosaurs!

At the beach where we will release the turtles.

When at Bali, Pol and I attended a CS (CouchSurfing) Event where we visited a sea turtle "orphanage" and released some sea turtle babies at the sea.

In Bali there has been an alarming decrease in sea turtles nesting on the beach, due to tourism and also an increased interest in the meat and for religious sacrifices.
Several organisations around the island are trying to protect the hatching grounds or collect the eggs and then releases the baby turtles when they have already hatched.

  

They were not used to the sand!



Finally in the ocean, swimming away from the beach. They will not be back before in 30 years!

It was after spotting Arthur's tattoo during the release of the sea turtle babies that we decided to go to Dewa. Late in the night we arrived, but luckily he had time for us.

The Groninger Museum had several temporary and permanent collections when we visited in August 2012.
I saw a poster on the train station in Den Helder regarding the exhibition "Painting Canada, Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven" and got very fascinated by the poster picture ("The Pointers"). That was when I decided to go to Groningen and see this exhibition.

A chinese artist, Yin Xiuzhen, was also displayed there at the time, installations with philosophical undertones.
For all her installations, she always uses a lot of second hand clothes that she stitches up into new creations. Amazing!
